New Year’s Resolutions: WHY?

new-years-eveFive. Four. Three. Two. One! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We can all remember sitting up late on December 31st, watching the ball drop in New York City’s Time Square for the New Year. All of the confetti flying around, couples kissing, people celebrating the brand new year. Those are some of the many traditions that we have. One tradition that I can’t quite wrap my head around is the dreaded New Year’s Resolution!

I understand the concept of the New Year’s resolution, wanting to do something new and better for yourself in the new year; but why do people actually do it? Is it really to better themselves? For many of us, myself included, I feel that I need to have a resolution just because everyone asks, “What’s your New Year’s resolution this year?” My response is usually, “Um, the same as last year.” One of the most popular resolutions is losing weight or getting in shape. Gym memberships explode in January. But again, many people don’t follow through with it for more than a month or two?

So, why exactly do we set ourselves up for it? We all fail at them anyway, at least I usually do or I forget about it. Is it just because it is “tradition” and the societal norm of having to come up with one?

Whatever it may be, what is your New Year’s Resolution (if you have one), and after the first month, how is it going?
